Heat and slowness are usually the same problem: dust in the heatsink and thermal paste that dried out years ago. The chip protects itself by slowing down, so the machine gets hot and sluggish together. This is the cheapest repair in the shop and often the one that buys a laptop another two years.

Questions we get asked
- Will this make my old laptop fast again?
- If it is throttling from heat, the difference is large and immediate. If the cause is a failing drive or too little memory, cleaning will not help — and we will say so rather than charge you for it.
- How often should this be done?
- In Dubai, roughly every two years. Dust and the ambient heat here are harder on a laptop than in most places.
- My MacBook fans are loud but it is not hot. Is that still this?
- Possibly a failing fan bearing, which is a small part. Bring it in and we will tell you which.
