A check-up is what a car gets at a service and a laptop almost never does. We go through the machine in a fixed order, tell you what we found in plain words, and quote anything that needs doing. The check-up itself is free: if you decide not to go ahead with a repair, there is nothing to pay.

What the repair involves

  • Battery: cycle count, capacity against new, and any sign of swelling
  • Storage: SSD or hard drive health, free space, and whether it is on its way out
  • Thermals: temperatures under load, fan noise, and the state of the paste and heatsink
  • Hinges, lid, feet and case, and every port with a known-good cable
  • Keyboard, trackpad, camera, microphone, speakers and Wi-Fi, each tried
  • The charger itself, which is the fault more often than people expect
  • A written summary on WhatsApp, with photos of anything that needs attention

How it works

Is the check-up really free?
Yes. We look at the machine, tell you what we found and quote any repair. If you do not go ahead, you pay nothing.
How long does it take?
Usually the same day, often while you wait if the shop is quiet. Message first and we will tell you.
Can you check a laptop I am about to buy second-hand?
Yes, and it is one of the best uses of a check-up. Bring the seller or the machine in, and we will tell you the battery's real condition, whether the storage is failing, and whether it has been opened or had liquid in it.
